Microsoft Surface Pro 3: Designed to kill tablets and laptops in one swoop

Microsoft have just unveiled the curtain on their new Microsoft Surface Pro 3 and details on their intentions to erase the line between tablet and laptop – essentially, two birds with one stone. The new device is bigger, thiner and faster and certainly looks impressive on paper.

Compared to the previous devices in the Surface line, the screen is 2 inches bigger at 12 inchesand has a 3:2 aspect ratio, rather than the 16:9 ratio of the earlier tablets. The resolution comes in at 2160 x 1440 which Surface chief Panos Panay says is, ”the highest contrast ratios in the industry.”
Despite the larger screen the Surface Pro 3 is thinner, at 9.1 mm thick and also lighter, weighing it at 0.45 kg. It comes with a choice of the three Intel Core processors, so starting from the i3 up to the i7, with Panay saying it’s “the thinnest Intel Core product ever made.” Just to get a relative idea of that thinness, it’s 30% thinner than an 11-inch Macbook Air.

It also comes with new features that sets it apart from the others. There is a new ‘pen’ – and no apparently it’s not a stylus. With one click of the pen, the screen automatically wakes up (if the device was asleep) and opens to a fresh page of Microsoft One Note so you can jot your ideas down straight away. There is also palm sensing technology so you can rest your hand on the screen as you write with the pen.

Another new feature is the hinge of the kickstand. It comes with such a friction factor as to allow you to rest the device at any angle best suited for the application, be it on your lap or on your desk. In terms of battery, we’re told it offers up to nine hours of web-browsing battery life, although we imagine these numbers comes from the lower power spec models.
